Understanding What Makes a Music Video Engaging

To help shape my music promotion package, I created a questionnaire to better understand what audiences enjoy most in music videos. The aim was to explore how different elements such as creativity, storytelling, visuals, and emotion influence the audience’s connection with a song. This research is part of understanding the target audience and how music videos function as a media form.

After gathering the results from the questionnaire, it showed how much people value creativity, emotion, and simplicity in music videos. Many respondents said they lose interest if a video is too busy or chaotic, preferring visuals and pacing that match the song’s tone, lyrics, and overall mood. This highlights the importance of aligning mise-en-scène, editing, and narrative structure with the music to create a meaningful experience. For example, 60% of respondents said storytelling was the most important element in a music video. Some mentioned artists like Ed Sheeran, known for meaningful and emotional videos, showing that storytelling and connection matter. Respondents also highlighted the importance of good music, appealing visuals such as scenery and costumes, and the role of teasers in building excitement.

Overall, the questionnaire demonstrates that effective music promotion through videos depends on balancing strong visuals with emotional depth and musical quality. This insight will directly inform my production decisions for “She's not gone yet but she's leavin”, helping me craft a video that engages my audience as active participants (prosumers) in a participatory culture.
