Significance Of The Song I Chose

I debated a lot which songs to use, but in the end chose :  "She’s Not Gone Yet But She’s Leaving" by The Fratellis. This is a song I genuinely enjoy and have listened to outside of this project. Indie rock is usually the genre I’m drawn to, and this song stands out because it sounds upbeat on the surface but carries a more emotional meaning underneath. That contrast is something I really like, as it makes the song feel more realistic rather than overly dramatic. I also really love the title of the song and how  honest and slightly uncomfortable it feels. It suggests a moment where someone is still physically there, but emotionally already halfway gone. That idea felt relatable and realistic, which made it a strong choice for a narrative-based music video. The song doesn’t rush into its meaning, which mirrors the slow and reflective tone I wanted to create in the opening, slowly building up to the meaning.

Lyrics & Meaning:

When listening to the song, I really resonate with them as I'm in a period in my life where I am transitioning to university and independence/adulthood. For example: "She'll take what she needs and she'll do what she must" implies a lot of independence and self-preservation. I've always struggled with being confident and sure in myself and this song pushes this meaning onto me to adapt to it. In my music video , I want my main character to put herself first and show the audience that she chooses her self each time, a message I think is important for my target audience. Another lyric I really want to capture attention to is "When she knew just what she'd become" showing that there is self-realization and awareness going on, she's not completely oblivious and this shows maturity and can be  turning point to where the character in the music video finally understands herself.

The song was released as part of the 2013 album We Need Medicine, but unlike some of their singles, it was not given a fully produced, story-based music video. Most versions of the song that exist online are album audio uploads, lyric-style videos, or live performances, not an official music video. This works in my favour because I can confidently say my music video is an original interpretation of the song's theme as there are no pre-existing visuals to help me. I have full creative freedom to imagine a narrative that fits the lyrics.
