Inspiration

The main inspiration behind my music video is that the movement should feel natural rather than performative. I don’t want the dancing to look rehearsed or like a typical performance to camera. Instead, I want it to feel carefree and in-the-moment, with jumping, kicking, and loose body movement that follows the beat of the song. I can create strong and energetic cuts with this style of dancing.

I really like collage-style editing and graphic elements, even including Superman comic strip influences, which link back to the original single artwork for the song. I want to experiment with fast transitions, jump cuts, and layered visuals, so the video feels playful and slightly messy rather than polished.

A big influence for this is A$AP Rocky’s L$D, especially the way it uses high exposure, bold colour filters, and slowed-down then sped-up movement. I like how the camera in that video feels unsteady and experimental, almost like it’s drifting with the music. I want to use similar techniques, such as speeding clips up, slowing them down suddenly, and moving the camera up and down so it doesn’t feel perfectly balanced or predictable.

One of the biggest challenges will be making sure the storyline is still clear, even with all the visual experimentation. This is something I’ve thought about by looking at Björk’s Venus as a Boy, which has a very clear and simple narrative despite being artistic. The message and emotion are easy to understand because the visuals directly support the song’s meaning. I want to achieve a similar balance in my own video, where the editing and movement are expressive and creative, but the audience can still follow the emotional journey of the character.
